It’s hard casting dries on a warm summer evening

Fishing was hard today….hard if you think casting dries to rising trout while being bombarded with solar rays is a chore! Throw in a steak topped w/ blue cheese compound butter, charred onion-tomato-basil-balsamic salad, fresh herbed bread and you’re really suffering. Caddis activity was decent this afternoon but a barrage of suckers spawning put a …

Knocking off work early to fish the Baldwin River

A few weekends ago, my parents were in town and we had the chance to fish some property that a friend of Jays owns. It’s up on the Baldwin River not too far from the confluence of the Pere Marquette. While it was a pretty short ordeal, it was great to get out for a …

Muskegon River – Oct. 30, 2012

Josh w/ his first spey steelie!     Today started out with a call to make sure everyone was still planning on the trip despite the bleak forecast.  John and Josh assured me they were not the kind of men to back down so we went ahead with our plans.  Started out spey fishing which was …

Muskegon River guide trip 3/7 – Steelhead and Trout combo

Dennis with one of his first steelhead ever, not bad! The more people request these combo trips in the winter the more I like them.  They just make sense.  Fish both low light periods for steelhead(when they are most active) and fish for trout the rest of the time.  It amazes me how many people …

On The River: Gunnison Gorge, Delta, CO

March 6, 2010 I know I start every blog with a nostalgic – longing for fishing – but what can I say, about an hour after I’m off the river, I am typically longing to be back on the water. And in the winter, when spectacular fishing days are sporadic at best, you better believe …

On the River: Ashtabula River, Ashtabula, Ohio

November 23, 2009 Michelle and I flew home, to Ohio, for Thanksgiving and the natural thing to do is figure out how to get to a steelhead river. I mean, let’s be honest folks, I’m a thankful guy, but I’m a lot more thankful for everything when I’ve got an 8 lb. steelhead on the …

Jackson Wyoming 2009: Part 3 of 7

October 5, 2009 Part 3 Day 2 is when the snow hit. We went to sleep the night before and knew we were in for a bit of snow, nothing much really … until we awoke at about 1 AM with the tent roof resting about 1 foot above our faces! It was quite hilarious …

October 4, 2009 Part 2 ***Warning: This day ends with me scooching away with my tail tucked between my legs, so please, read on if you like stories of humility.*** We had arrived late Saturday night, headed up to camp and slept like babies in the tent Kevin had set up for us earlier that …

On the River: Frying Pan River, Basalt, CO

June 8, 2009 How can you not love the Pan? True, it’s much like the Taylor River, if you fish it too much there’s something wrong with you. Not because it’s not an awesome river, or extremely fun, but because you need life in moderation… and it’s unnatural. If all of your fly fishing experience …

Roadtrip over…

Well, this blog has gone a little neglected lately. The good news is that it is because I’ve been getting out on the river more than I have time to blog, so that’s not all bad. Jay and I have returned from the Teva Mtn. Games humbled and in need of much practice. Neither of …

Jun 03 2009

Well, in three days time Jay and I will be hitting our first ever fly fishing competition. Yes… that’s right, we are heading to the Teva Mtn. Games in Vail, CO. I must admit that I’m a little torn between mixing fly fishing and competition. In all fairness, it’s more of a publicity stunt since …
